Tall oil acid (Toluic acid) is one of the isomers of benzoic acid, which exists in the ortho-para (o-), meta (m-) and para (p-) three different structures.

The reaction products of tall oil acid with boric acid and diethanolamine (Diethanolamine) are mainly tall oil acid borate (Toluic acid borate ester) and tall oil acid diethanolamine salt (Toluic acid diethanolamine salt).

Tall oil acid borate is white or light yellow crystal at room temperature, soluble in organic solvents such as alcohol and ether, insoluble in water. Tall oil boric acid esters are mainly used as catalysts, preservatives and additives, and can be used in synthetic resins, coatings, adhesives and other fields.

Tall oil acid diethanolamine salt is a white particulate solid, soluble in water and organic solvents. The main uses of such salt compounds include as surfactants, corrosion inhibitors, stabilizers and lubricants. They can be used in the preparation of detergents, rust inhibitors, dyes, pigments and other chemical products.

The method for preparing tall oil acid borate ester is to directly react tall oil acid with boric acid to generate ester product. The method for preparing the diethanolamine salt of tall oil acid is to react tall oil acid with diethanolamine to form a salt compound.

When using these compounds, attention should be paid to safety. Tall oil acid and boric acid are irritants and may cause irritation and discomfort on contact with the skin, eyes or inhalation. Diethanolamine can also cause eye and skin irritation, and inhalation may cause irritating respiratory symptoms. Therefore, during operation, appropriate personal protective equipment should be worn and good ventilation should be ensured.
