| Physical and Chemical Properties | Tetraimidazole hydrochloride also known as DL-2,3,5, 6-tetrahydro-6-phenylimidazo [2,1-b] thiazole hydrochloride, white crystalline powder, bitter and astringent, soluble in water, methanol, slightly soluble in ethanol, insoluble in acetone, is a broad-spectrum veterinary anthelmintics with high efficiency and low toxicity. |

| In vitro study | Tetramisole is orally nontoxic and is administered at a potent low dose by injection against all adult and juvenile gastrointestinal and pulmonary nematodes tested in 14 different hosts. Tetramisole (10 μg/mL) acts on the worm virus, causing a sustained contraction of the isolated muscle. Tetramisole acts on the muscle of the roundworm, reducing its resting potential from 34 mV to 10 mV, and causing a direct or indirect stimulation of the muscle before acting on the cat with a high K Tetramisole (0.1 mM), enhances the twitch response of the muscles. Tetramisole (0.1 mM) acts on chickens to enhance the preparation of the twitch response and reverse the inhibitory effect of Tubocurarine, producing reversible neuromuscular blockade and muscle contracture. |
| In vivo study | Tetramisole (2 mg/kg, I. v.) acting on cats, after a delay of 20 seconds, a strong contraction of the nictitating membrane is produced, accompanied by a brief drop in blood pressure followed by a sustained rise that lasts for up to 20 minutes. Tetramisole (2 mg/kg) produced a greater contractile response than did cats not treated with reserpine. Tetramisole (5-10 mg/kg, I. v.) in rabbits caused a transient sharp drop in blood pressure, partly antagonized by atropine. Tetramisole (15 mg/kg) treated for 3 weeks, the number of eggs of the fecal worm began to increase and continued to rise to 12 weeks. |
