| In vitro study | Tenovin-1 is an activator of p53 and increases the amount of p53 protein within 2 hours of treatment. Tenovin-1 treatment did not change p53 mRNA levels. Tenovin-1 (10 μm) protected p53 from mdm 2 mediated degradation, and had little effect on p53 protein synthesis. Tenovin-1 acts on a group of p53 expressing tumor cells, inhibits cell growth, and induces apoptosis. They act by inhibiting the protein deacetylation activity of SirT1 and SirT2, two important members of the sirtuin family.
