It is easily reduced to metallic bismuth by hydrogen, hydrocarbons, and the like.

to a bismuth nitrate solution (80 to 90 ° C.), a sodium hydroxide aqueous solution containing no carbon dioxide was added dropwise and mixed. The solution was kept alkaline during the precipitation process to produce a white, volume-expanded bismuth oxide hydrate Bi(OH)3 precipitate. The solution was heated and stirred for a short time to dehydrate into yellow bismuth trioxide. The bismuth oxide was washed by decantation with water, filtered and dried to obtain a finished bismuth oxide.
