Pitstop 2 - Introduction
Pitstop 2 is often referred to as NBS(N-bromosuccinimide). It is a white crystalline powder with a special smell. The following is a description of its nature, use, preparation and safety information:
Nature:
Pitstop 2 is a very important bromination reagent, which can stably release bromine without releasing free chlorine. It is soluble in ethanol, chloroform, dimethylformamide and Ether solvents at room temperature, but almost insoluble in water.
Use:
NBS is widely used in bromination reactions in organic synthesis, especially when producing olefins or aromatic compounds. It can be used for selective halogenation of brominated compounds, such as the conversion of alcohols to brominated alkanes, or the replacement of hydrogen atoms on aromatic compounds with bromine atoms. In addition, NBS can also be used as a brominating agent for ketones or aldehydes to produce α-bromoketones and α-bromoaldehydes.
Preparation Method:
Pitstop 2 can react ethyl acrylate with bromine to obtain ethyl bromoacrylate, then react with succinimide to obtain 4-bromopropylimide, and then synthesize NBS with hypobromomethane.
Safety Information:
NBS can be regarded as a relatively safe reagent under normal conditions of use. Because the bromine released by it is irritating and corrosive, avoid contact with skin and eyes when using it, and ensure that the operation is carried out in a well-ventilated laboratory. In addition, NBS should also be stored in a dry, cool place, away from flammable substances and oxidizing agents. In the disposal of waste, should be in accordance with the relevant provisions of the correct disposal.
