Add 1,2-dichlorobenzene (100mL) and oxalyl bromide (60.6g;281mmol) to a 250-mL three-necked round bottom flask equipped with a magnetic stirrer and a reflux condenser tube. Methylaminoacetonitrile (7.01g;65.8mmol) was added to this solution, and then the reaction was heated to 80°C under nitrogen. After 18h, the resulting mixture was cooled to room temperature, evaporated under reduced pressure, and then the resulting residue was purified by rapid chromatography to give 3, 5-dibromo-1-methylpyrazine-2 (1H)-one (2.87g,16%), an off-white solid: mp94-95 °C; MS(ESI )m/z267(M H).
